The Xfit Reader

I'm recently retired so I have more time for reading and Crossfit. I'll try and blog about both since they are both my favorites.
Quentins - Maeve Binchy Wonderful story per usual!

A Reliable Wife

A Reliable Wife - Robert Goolrick, Mark Feuerstein Very emotional book!
Got Mistletoe? - Andi Anderson This was a very heartwarming story about two people that just have that chemistry that most of us hope to find with someone. I really enjoyed Ryan's love of the holiday season along with his cute antlers and smiled at Blake's feelings about "his elf" and his enjoying the holiday more because of it.
I hope to hear more from this great couple. They made me smile during this season.
Devil's Pact - Samantha Cruise OMG!! It's over! Finally! I really hate to feel this way about this book. It was a great story with super intense, raunchy menage sex and some interesting characters but it should have been half the length. It went on so long with mind-numbing (and I'm sure a few other parts) sex over and over that I found myself skipping parts!!! Yikes! I never do that! Skip the juicy parts??
I'm not really sure what I think about the heroine either. I'm not a "weak" heroine fan anyway and she showed Devon, continuously, how much she loved him by doing anything sexually that he could dream up whether it was going to feel good or not. According to her reactions though, I guess it ALL felt amazing. Right!
It was a definite fantasy from the "Cannon" to the dynamics of the relationships. It would have been a four if I hadn't fallen asleep reading it last night. :p
Lola Dances - Victor J. Banis I love it when a book takes me through the emotional spectrum and this book did it for me. It had substance to it. I really enjoyed that it was more about the horrible trials and finally the triumph that Terry experiences. The sex was not the focal point in this book although it's certainly present.
The Last Vampire - Whitley Strieber I read a lot of vampire paranormal romance and though I really enjoyed this book, you should not confuse it with paranormal romance. Even though there is a bit of romance and it's definately paranormal it's more horror, IMHO. I love horror though so it worked for me.
This is the second book in the trilogy and it was rating a 5 star for me until the end which I thought was pretty lame. It does set things up for another book but that was about it.
In The Hunger we have Miriam and Sarah's story of Sarah's seduction and turning by Miriam. This book continues wit that but we end up with more of Miriam's story and learn about her past. I loved this part! I thought Strieber did a great job with the historical descriptions and it was fascinating to read about how far back Miriam and her mother actually went. She is an old broad! lol Anyway, along with trying to find another Keeper (like herself) to breed with, Miriam is also being hunted by Paul Ward who is an old CIA (not that old really) agent who's life mission it is to stamp out all vampires. For some reason though they have a very strong physical reaction to each other the couple of times they cross paths, unlike any either has known before.
There are some silly parts that didn't really fit like Leo who was a girl that Miriam turns in this story and most of time I just wanted to slap her. We also get more into the master/slave dynamics with Miriam and Sarah and are given some pretty hot sex scenes. I'll definately be reading #3.
Beyond Illusion - Sherri L. King Whew! Ms. King never lets me down which is why all of her books are keepers for me.
This is a tale about an illusionist and a very cynical magazine reporter. She shows up at one of his shows to write an article and he picks her out of the crowd like she called to him. From then on, she never had a chance. Between his amazing magic and his wonderful kisses that led to some hot sex, I never had a chance either! Wow!
Sherri does such a great job in her descriptions of sensual acts that you could swear they were happening to you and you really wish they were.
5+ stars from this fan. :)
Immortals: The Crossing - Joy Nash Not really a review but a note:

I had a love/hate war going on with myself through this book. I loved the Mac but got really upset several times with Artemis. I know she was doing all of this to save her child but I did feel so bad for Mac everytime she betrayed him.
On the upside, and what earned this book 5 stars from me, was the magic and the spells! I really enjoyed reading about their trip to hell and the demons and how they escaped them using the life magic and the death magic together. I thought Nash did a great job with that and it definately saved the book for me.
April Fool's Day - Bryce Courtenay Wow! I know my eyes are still red from crying as I finished this book this morning before heading to work. Obviously that was not a good choice but what do you do? This is a book so full of courage and love that my words won't do it justice.
Bryce Courtenay writes his son's story of growing up as a haemophiliac who acquires AIDS from a blood transfusion during the time when AIDS was just hitting the news in the states. Damon grew up in Australia so no one really new what it was all about until it was too late and it was already in the blood banks.
Damon's attitude thoughout his 24 years of living with thousands of blood transfusions and an endless amount of sickness of one form or another is amazing! When he is in his late teens he meets Celeste, another teenager and the love that grows between them is one you just don't hear about. She becomes his world and he becomes hers.
This book took me through many emotions, including sadness, but it was also an inspiration in so many ways. I highly recommend it.
Bryce is one of my favorite authors and even though this was a true story (non-fiction is just not my favorite)he always weaves a tale that sweeps you up and draws you inside.
What Men Don't Talk About - Maggie Hamilton This audio book was an inside look into....well... What Men Don't Talk About! and why they don't talk about it.
It was written and read by an Australian so to just listen to it was quite enjoyable for me but I did learn a thing or two along the way. The author conducted many interviews with a lot of different types of men. Some of the stories they told went from sad to downright horrifying. I did find myself shaking my head several times thinking how something I heard made a lot of sense in regards to the men in my life.
Being a woman that gets really frustrated with men and almost everyone else that isn't good at communicating, I really appreciated this book. Many of the ideas in it related to most people we come into contact with that can't always "share" themselves.
I could see me listening to this again in a few years when some of the ideas lose their shine.
Colters' Woman - Maya Banks The story has been repeated several times around here so I won't bore you all with that but I will agree that the heroine caused my eyes to roll more times than I care to remember. Maybe I'm just not into the weak, can't-think-for-myself type of heroines in my books or maybe she just was extremely irritating but either way the brothers swooped in and saved the day. I loved them all with each of their different personalities. After all, if you are going to be tossed around among three gorgeous men, do you really want them all to be from the same mold?
His Dark Materials (His Dark Materials #1-3) - Philip Pullman This was a truly amazing story. I'm actually giving it a 4.75 instead of a 5. It was getting a strong 5 until the ending. It wasn't a horrible ending but it could have been better. I cried if that tells you something. : /
Love Ain't Nothing But Sex Misspelled - Harlan Ellison This is my first book from this author and I'll start by saying I'll definitely read his books again. He has been around for many years but has a refreshing voice if you like sharp wit and a cynical but accurate view of love. I'm a skimmer most of the time in the books I read but every once in awhile I find an author that strings their words together in a way that makes me pause in my reading frenzy and slow down to read every word. Ellison did that for me.
These were 16 short stories about different types of love from lovers to spouses to our friends and country. I laughed at many of the stories and almost cried at a few too.
The Ultimate Kink - Cameron Dane After much thought, I gave this Erotic suspense with BDSM scenes a 5 because I can see me reading it again. On a different day it might slide back to a 4.5 due to our heroine's issues but today it's 5 stars. I really enjoyed all of the sex scenes (very hot!) but the first one was the clincher for me. Whoo!!! *fans herself quickly*

Canin and Kasey are parters in a security agency along with Canin's brother Ronin and Adam (see Finding Home for their story *2 thumbs up*). They take on a case where it calls for them to go undercover as a married couple in a sex club to find a rapist(s) that targets couples.
Canin moves in with Kasey and realizes that there is a wounded person under all of her tough exterior and she triggers something in him, besides his libido, that makes him want to dig to find out.
As the story progresses, the scenes at the club as well as the ones that happen in her home, get Kasey to open up about her horrible past.

I really did enjoy these two characters together and though the ending wasn't too shocking when it came to the bad guys, there were other parts of it that were very heartwarming and emotional.
The sexual chemistry between the two is dynamite. Canin is a big alpha male and Kasey is a big alpha female that refuses to take any grief from any one. They clash and sizzle through out the book but Canin shines as the hero with his patience with Kasey and her kinks.
I also enjoyed the presence of Ronin and Adam in it since I just loved them in Finding Home.
Finding Home - Cameron Dane Whew!! Now that was a hot little read. I loved the build up between the men.
Adam was a punk kid that happened to try and pickpocket the wrong or is it the right guy. Rhone takes him into his security business and gives him a chance to make something of himself. Through the years Adams love for Rhone grows but Rhone continues to date women and treat Adam as his best friend.
The relationship between these two men is really wonderful to follow. There is a whole spectrum of moments from fun to sweet to sad to super sexy.
I love how Dane carries this story over the length of time. For a short story it lasts a long time. :)
New Year's Kiss - Tielle St. Clare When I bought this awhile back, I bought it for the cover and because it was menage. When I started reading it yesterday, I realized that our heros were werewolves. Needless to say, I was a bit surprised although it really added to the dynamics of the story.

Mikhal is an alpha male and Zach is a beta male. They leave the pack before Mikhal and his father (leader of their pack) get into it, and make a new life many miles north. They meet Taylor, who just got dumped by her boyfriend and neither wolf is willing to give her up to the other. They jointly take her to a New Year's Eve party, much to the shock of her friends, and end up giving her a New Year's kiss that she won't soon forget. She finds that she can't chose between the dangerously dark Mikhal and the sweet, sexy Zach. This is a very hot story about how these characters make a threesome among werewolves work for them.

I would have liked to have seen a bit more interaction between Mikhal and Zach which was held until the end of the story. Other than that, I really enjoyed it.
