The Xfit Reader

I'm recently retired so I have more time for reading and Crossfit. I'll try and blog about both since they are both my favorites.
At Her Command - Marcia James I thoroughly enjoyed this romantic suspense. The mystery was there along with some hot sex, a few laughs and some sex toy education.

Domino is a DEA agent that goes undercover at a dominatrix club as Mistress Bella, to uncover a drug ring. One of her first clients is Dalton who is a local cop, posing as a client to find the killer of his partner and best friend, who also was undercover at the club before his murder. There are sparks from the very first meeting between these two but Domino isn't sure she could be with a man that wants to be submissive (no matter how difficult it seems for his alpha-male self) and Dalton isn't sure he could be with someone that wants him to be submissive.
Throw in an undercover FBI agent, another undercover female cop, who also have great chemistry and a tiny, drug-sniffing dog and you have a fun story.
I hope she comes out with a sequel as it seems to be set up for one.
Caine's Reckoning - Sarah McCarty Well let me start off by saying I totally understand why this book is all over the map when it comes to reviews.
My emotions did a rollercoaster ride throughout the whole book. I want to add here that I was glad I chose the ride but can't say I enjoyed the whole thing. :D
We have the classic "abused by men in the Wild West" heroine that is rescued by the "alpha tough cowboy" of the Wild West.
In this case the abused heroine has been severely used by some high dollar citizens. The hero rushes in with his high libido and dominating personality. This was where I got a bit mad. I felt he should have been a bit more sensitive to what she had been through from before. I was turned way off by a few of the earlier scenes. She became a Barbiedoll to me.
I did keep on reading despite my instincts to quit at this point. I was glad I did. The sex scenes were very sensual and hot!!!
I won't go on besides this point to ruin it for everyone else but this book will be a test for some.
Wild Borders - Cheyenne McCray This is a story about a woman with low self-esteem that hooks up with a sexy cowboy who makes her feel beautiful again. The sex is very hot, the storyline predictable (hence the 4 not 5) and it was a fast read. McCray's Wild series is quite fun and don't tire reading them.
Taken - Jet Mykles Wow! There isn't much more I can say about these sexy elves that hasn't been said already. Jet has created a wonderful world with some lovable characters. I'm thinking of taking a walk in the woods around here some night. Who knows? Maybe I'll get lucky too! ;) This one is a definate keeper for me.
Hot Blood 1: Tales of Erotic Horror - Harlan Ellison, Robert R. McCammon, Dennis Etchison, Chet Williamson, F. Paul Wilson, Mike Newton, Robert Bloch, Jeff Gelb, Michael Garrett, Ramsey Campbell, Theodore Sturgeon, Ray Garton, Lonn Friend, David J. Schow, Rex Miller, Steve Rasnic Tem, Lisa Tuttle, Gary Brandn I would have given this a 4.5 if I could have. It was a great little group of stories that elicited many different emotions and actions. They are stories that combine a little sex with a little horror as the title states. I found myself facinated with the woman that through sex could take over her lovers' bodies and chuckling over The Thang (sometimes you get what you ask for) and grossed out by The Meat Market.
These little anthologies are not for everyone but if you are a horror fan or an erotica fan with a strong stomach not looking for romance, give them a try. This is the first of many.
In a Sunburned Country - Bill Bryson Ok! First of all I'm here to tell you that non-fiction is normally not my bag. I think I got this book because I forgot to send in the "do not send" notice in a book club. That said..... I'm soooo happy that I didn't and I "made" myself read this. OMG!!! I lost track of how many times I laughed until there were tears running down my cheeks and how many smiles and chuckles it rang out of me!
This is a book about Bryson's trips (I believe he combines a few trips to "Oz" into this one book) to the really undiscovered island of Australia and his impressions of what he sees and who he meets. There is history, wonderfully funny and horribly gruesome and sad stories, lodging and traveling tips and a long list of places there that I really now want to see.
His wit and sarcastic humor is what did it for me. I will look for more of his books and hope that he goes on more journeys to share with his reading audience.
Friends on a Rotten Day: The Astrology of Friendships - Hazel Dixon-Cooper Have you ever had a friend do something odd or act in a way where you are saying to yourself "WTF"? Well I have and that is why I picked up this book. First of all I turned to the Gemini section (mine) and read up on myself. What I love about the "Rotten" books (Yes, I also have Born on a Rotten Day and Love on a Rotten Day) is that they give you the negative side of your sign as well as a small bit of the positive side. I like to see my downfalls so that I can be aware of them and hopefully change or catch them before they happen.
I found myself shaking my head at how my friends must view me at times but also feeling good that now I knew what to watch for in myself. Then I turned to my friends' signs and my sister's sign and it really helped me to see why they acted they way they did at times.
These are all fun books to read. Hazel is the Cosmo astrology girl so if you like reading about astrology with some humor pick one or all of these books up. :)

Red Shoe Diaries: Four on the Floor

Four on the Floor: Zalman King's Red Shoe Diaries #6 - Zalman King, Stacey Donovan, Elise D'Haene First of all I would like to start out by saying that when I was loaned this book I thought it might be a bit cheesy. I loved the show but wasn't sure about reading about it. There are cheesy parts. I could do without Jake's comments after opening each letter or at the end of the first three stories.
But.... the surprising thing about this book was it was hot! It was hot like your typical erotica book read around here but it also has some emotion and more substance to it than some I have read. I'm a skimmer by nature but didn't want to with this book.
The first story is called The Psychiatrist. She sits and listens to one of her patients descriptions of her escapades whit strangers and wonders about being that free and open herself.
The next story was about two couples and how they danced, for years, around hooking up as a foursome.
The third story was my least favorite and is about a dancer trying out for a music video and how she, with some outside help, is finally able to free herself of her small-minded upbringing.
The final story is my favorite. It's written by two women that, in the story, write each other back and forth about their loves, losses and all of those inbetween. I loved the insight in this story.
I would have given this a 4.5 but once again, no dice! lol
Lucky You - Carl Hiaasen Rarely have I found an author that has made me laugh out loud so many times in one book. Hiaasen has done that for me in the books of his I have read. I love his wit and dry humor.
This is a great story about two lottery ticket winners in Florida. One is a young black woman that works in a vet's office and loves animals (keeps an aquarium full of 45 baby turtles that she saved) and the other is a redneck, white supremacist that doesn't feel like sharing the $28 mil., especially with a "negro". Thus begins the story of his search for JoLayne and her ticket. Along the road we meet a sexy newspaper journalist, his wife that refuses to divorce him because she might look bad, the religious fanatics that relieve the tourists of their money with weeping Mary idols and oil stains in the form of Jesus Christ, a Hooters waitress and many more hilarious characters.
If you like a good laugh and a little mystery, give this one a shot.
Running Wild - Sarah McCarty This is three stories of extremely alpha werewolves and how they found their mates which happen to be sisters. I really enjoyed this one and if the star system would work right, would have given it a 4.5. The sex was off the charts. I thought the ending was a bit abrupt which why I didn't give it a 5.
Great book!
Kill and Tell - Linda Howard This is the first in a trilogy featuring John Medina (ultimate spy). He doesn't have much play time in this book though as it's centered around yummy Marc, a cop from New Orleans and the withdrawn Karen, nurse from Ohio. Her estranged father winds up murdered in New Orleans and since he was ex-military Marc wants to help Karen find out what happened and also to help her get over her self-protection mode. It gets a bit steamy in places and they do seem to spend a lot of quality bed-time getting to know each other in between dodging people trying to kill Karen for a mysterious book her father sent her right before he was killed.
I'm enjoyed this book although it didn't have some of the fun wit that a couple of the other's I've read had. I am looking forward to All the Queen's Men which tells John's story.
Dangerous Boys and Their Toy - Shayla Black MmmmHmmm! What can I say? This book was right up my Purvetted Alley. Two gorgeous males with longer hair and beautiful bodies and one fiesty female, all having some open-minded sex. Underlying it all is a mystery about the missing witness, that one of the hunks (alpha bounty hunter) is trying to find along with the other hunk (alpha but-in-touch-with-his-feelings cop)that needs him to testify against another criminal. The woman was found at this guy's hideaway trying to get "in touch" with herself and inner issues.
The sex is way hot but a bit slow in places for me (see the 4 stars). I tend to like it a bit faster but with this story and the personal issues, it really did go at the pace that it needed to go.
Erotic Interludes - Cheyenne McCray This is a three story book from McCray centered about BDSM as if you couldn't tell from the picture. (Got a lot of interesting looks at the gym while reading this one, let me yell ya!)
Anyway, I loved the first story which centers around the hot, hunky boss who sells his company to the mousy assistant who has wanted him for the years she worked for him.
The second story (connected by light characters in the first story) delves us deeper into the BDSM world. Being a "take charge" person myself (orange for those that took that personality test) I had a tough time with some of the submissive stuff. I can see where that might be ok for those that can decide to give up control to that other person but I have never been sure I could do that so reading about it makes me squirm (in a good or bad way? who is to say).
The third story takes us even deeper into the control issue with giving it up to a complete stranger. The sex, like all of the stories, was hot but I thought this one ended a bit abruptly.
All in all though, hot sex and some interesting lessons learned about BDSM!
Hot Stuff - Carly Phillips I'm a lover of hot, fun little romance books and Carly Phillips is right up my alley. This is my second book of hers but I have several more and am looking forward to them. The Hot Zone books center around a middle-aged guy and his three nieces that help him run his sports agency, The Hot Zone. This was the story of Annebelle who has a knack for picking the wrong guys that keep breaking her heart and Brandon, an ex-football player turned retreat owner. He is having problems with vandalism at his newly constructed retreat and she is assigned to help him win back prospective lodgers with some good PR. They have a fun dynamic and it was great watching them try to avoid the chemistry between each other.
Heir to the Shadows - Anne Bishop Wow!! My face is still a bit damp from tears and my heart is still pounding. This is the second book in this trilogy. I read but didn't review the first although it was almost as good. I'm a lover of fantasy, humor, sex and mystery and this trilogy contains all of that. This second book was light on the sex but when you read something this amazing, it really doesn't matter to me.
This is the fantasy story of a girl and how she becomes queen of almost all she sees. In the first book we find out some about her lineage and then about the horrible people that pose as her family. She is "witch" and has power beyond any that has been seen before but she must grow up as human and take the abuse and use that goes along with it.
This second book is her story of her rise to power, her search for her true lover and her love and acceptance for the "kindred" of the Blood (her lineage).
This is a wonderful trilogy for almost anyone. It is so well written that you are in the middle of the story before you know it. Even the long descriptions of things are enticing and I'm a fast reader aka a skimmer. I find myself not skimming in these books.
Now I can't wait to jump into the Queen of Darkness. If I could rate this trilogy higher than a 5, I would do so.
Love You to Death - Melissa Senate Being a big chick-lit fan and Red Dress Ink fan this book was right up my alley. It was a cute story about a girl who was being framed for the murder and attempted murder of three of her ex-boyfriends that dumped her in horrible ways like catching one in the bedroom at her birthday party with a woman's lips attached in the midsection. Ouch!! Not a fun way to find out about the other woman!
Anyway the hunky detective that refuses to believes she is innocent is non-other than her high-school crush that didn't even know she existed back then.
It wasn't as witty or as funny as some chick-lit I've read but the plot was good and the who-done-it ending was a surprise.
